Vocabulary is the fundamental of English learning. Although many junior high school English teachers have realized the importance of it and spent a lot of time and energy on vocabulary teaching, the students’ vocabulary level is still so low. Therefore, it is an essential task for junior high school teachers to find a time- saving and efficient method for vocabulary teaching in junior high school.The theoretical basis of the Scaffolding teaching method is the theory of constuctivism and Vygotsky’s “the zone of proximal development”. It is able to provide some timely and appropriately assistance for those learners who are blocked by some difficulties in vocabulary learning. This teaching method has been confirmed as an effective mode of classroom teaching in western nations, and it is widely used. This article is guided by the scaffolding teaching method discussing how to make the junior high school English vocabulary teaching more effective than it used to be.In order to validate this study, the author chose two classes at similar levels as the experimental subjects. One of the classes is the experimental, the other is the comparative. The students in the experimental class acquire new words by the scaffolding teaching method, while the comparative class was taught by the traditional teaching method. At the beginning of the study, the author offered the pre-questionnaire and pre-test to the two classes to find the current situation of the students’ vocabulary learning. After three months’ experiment, the author tested the two classes again and did the second questionnaire in the experimental class to see whether the scaffolding teaching method is effective in junior high school vocabulary teaching or not.According to the data from the study, the scaffolding teaching method not only helps the students expand their vocabulary size, but also improve the students’ interest in vocabulary learning. Therefore, the scaffolding teaching in junior high school English vocabulary teaching is very effective.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter introduces the reasons and aims of the research. The second chapter aims to discuss the research status of scaffolding teaching method in vocabulary teaching of junior high school and put forward the innovation of this study. The third chapter is the focus of the research, which introduces the research design and the usage pattern of scaffolding teaching method. The fourth chapter is the data analysis of this study. The fifth chapter is conclusion, which summaries the experimental results, the suggestions of further study and the limitations of this study. The author hopes this thesis will be certain reference value of the vocabulary teaching in junior high school.
