In the west, Plato was the first philosopher to systematically explore civic education thought.Civic education in Plato’s political philosophy system is unique. Because of many intertwined theories, Plato’s thought not only has profound theoretical basis, also make it an important clue of a grasp of Plato’s political philosophy system. Civic education thought is an important content of The Republic, and runs through the whole process of building his utopia. Plato believed that the city is not only composed of citizen political community, or a large citizen education organization. Citizen education could make the city beautiful, and it’s also one of the most important things for the city-state rulers. Ideal kingdom is the result of reflection of decline of the Greek civic politics and education. By studying his civic education thought, we can understand Plato better, and know more about his philosophy.In this paper, the main framework consists of four parts. The first part researches the background, significance, current situation, methods and innovations of this paper. The second part discusses the purpose of the civic education. For Plato, the most important purpose of the citizen education is to achieve justice.The polis is divided into three classes by Plato, which are producers, auxiliary and rulers. To realize the justice of the polis, the important thing is that three classes complete their work well. Likewise, to achieve individual justice, it’s important for three parts of the soul to do their own things well. Only fully understand the city-state justice and individual justice, we can better understand Plato’s purpose of civic education. The third part discusses the content of the civic education. Plato’s civic education can be divided into primary stage and advanced stage two parts. This paper respectively discusses the process of citizen education from two aspects in detail.The fourth part discusses the characteristic of citizen education, limitations and significance. Plato’s thought has a profound influence on later generations, at the same time his theory is very meaningful for the study today.This paper researches his thought according to the purpose, content and meaning of civic education. In this paper, based on the related text books and historical and cultural context, we research background of his time, social background and the way of thinking; through deep understanding of his works, we describe the work, reveal the face of civic education thought and value. As a valuable ideological heritage, Plato’s civic education thought has a positive influence on later generations.Its original ideas struck a chord with many thinkers. As Plato’s the most famous student, Aristotle also attaches great importance to civic education, and many points are similar to his. Thus, Plato’s civic education thought has a unique charm. Plato’s civic education thought still has a guiding significance on today’s education sector, and it’s also worth to re-examining and drawing its essence.
