As a one-thousand-year-old institution, Yuelu Academy has been regarded as one of the four most prestigious academies nationwide since the Northern Song dynasty. It is of great importance on the development history of China’s academies. Famous scholars including Zhang Shi, Zhu Xi, Wang Yangming, Zhen Dexiu, Wang Wenqing, Wang Xianqian hosted, restored the academy and even lectured there in succession, and they nurtured a large group of talents for the country, which made a great influence and contribution to the politics, academics, culture and education of Hunan and Hubei, even the whole country. Hence the old saying, “Chu is abundant of talents and most of them come from here.” Naturally it can be concluded that Yuelu Academy’s school running experience is worth attention. The course was an embodiment of its teaching contents and setting which had a greatly influence on student training, academic research and cultural heritage.Taking the Regulations of Yuelu Academy as a basic material, the paper is to conduct an in-depth research on the course of Yuelu Academy. Going through its course, it is noticed that Yuelu Academy offered various courses, including Confucianism,historiography, writing, literature and art, practical subjects, social affairs, manner and behavioral training, calligraphy, and etc. Though the economy and culture was less developed back then, Yuelu Academy still promoted Practical Statecraft by encouraging students to take practical subjects. To some extent, its course had met the requirements of the talent training, and further promoted students’ balanced development on every aspect including morality, intelligence, physique and art, and so on. Other than coping with the Imperial Examination, its course objective also had a practical value. It had abundant kinds of course categories and contents, and it emphasized the humanity and moral education.As an academy with a thousand years of history, Yuelu Academy’s course construction was considerably reasonable. By setting “clarifying human relations”, educating “the perfect man”, and self-initiated study as its course construction idea, it had gradually developed a set of unique course system, which included state course, local course and school course; compulsory course and elective course, and also explicit course and implicit course.As a place full of talents and masters, Yuelu Academy was the core base and the sacred palace for Huxiang Culture. During its 1000-year school running history, there were outstanding knowledge innovation and social moral representatives in each different period. They stayed active in various areas such as politics, economy, culture, military, and education, and they had made a great influence on history. In a way, they integrate themselves to Yuelu Academy. They attended lectures with profound academic thoughts given by masters; they got insights by extensively reading; they mold sentiment at the glamorous spring mountains in the Academy. Day by day, month by month, they found themselves engraved with the though of pass on the great philosophy and support person. Thought it was under the influence of the Imperial Examination, yet Yuelu Academy’s course was not set for the purpose of the Imperial Examination, instead it was to adapt to the Imperial Examination while sticking to its own characteristics and to right the wrongs of the Imperial Examination by adjusting its own course. The main feature of Yuelu Academy’s course was that it keep relationship of“seek harmony but not uniformity” t with the Imperial Examination, which was also the key reason why Yuelu academy was able to produce so many talents.
