Research On The Relationship Between Yuelu Academy And Hunan University

Hunan University has experienced a historical evolution with the process of"Academy-School-University" from Yuelu Academy. There aretwo different views on the history of Hunan university. One view is that HunanUniversity inherited from Yuelu Academy and it is a millennium institution. Whilethe other is that Hunan University has no inheritance relationship with Yuelu academyand the history of Hunan University should be dated from1926.The study of Hunan University’s history is not only about Hunan Universityitself, but also involves the standards of Chinese universities’ history. The studyindicates that Hunan University has material inheritance with Yuelu academy aswell as spiritual successor relationship. The suspicious voice of the inheritancerelationship between Yuelu academy and Hunan University can not be verified,since the related theory of the Hunan University History is rarely deeply studied,and also the unreasonable university school history standards exist. With only aslightly study on Hunan University History, you will find the following facts: thereare enough official documents show that Hunan University’s history can date backto Yuelu Academy; after the closure of the Higher School in Hunan in1912, HunanNormal college、 Hunan Public Polytechnic College kept running, Yuelu academycontinued constantly. From Yuelu academy to Hunan University, it has been belongto higher education.The view that the history of Hunan University can not bematched with Oxford、 Cambridge is out of the different standards for the Chineseand foreign school history. To measure the Chinese and foreign famous universitiesin accordance with the "core elements" of "University history standards",we canfind that all these well-known university can’t meet the "core elements" ofuniversity history standards completely. Thus it can be seen that there is someunreasonable factors in the present "university history standards", especially in theso-called "core elements". Through the research on the standards of universities’history, the author puts forward some opinions. First, we should put emphasis onthe principle of" specific analysis towards specific questions" and the principle of"leaving a room" during the existing standards of univeristies’ history. In addition,the study shows that the material inheritance and subjective voluntarily inheritance are very important in retrospecting the history of universities.
