Language, as a medium and carrier for human culture, is the best way for people to communicate. In recent years, the growth of China’s national power and the charm of Chinese culture, have caused more and more people to study and learn the Chinese language. In addition, after the Chinese government’s implementation of the Chinese internationalization strategy, Studying Chinese has become very popular worldwide. Korea, as a very close friend and ally of China, is affected by it as well. Although the Korean school system has only started teaching Chinese very recently, Chinese language is available as an option for foreign language studies at all levels, from elementary school to university. However, the system is still not perfect. Through literature analysis and surveys, this essay will use Gwang-ju high school as an example to analyze the current state and shortcomings of Chinese language education at the high school level. By being able to identify the causes of these flaws, this essay hopes to point out the flaws in the current Korean Chinese teaching system and to offer suggestions on how it can be improved.This report is divided into four chapters. The first chapter will deal with the background of this research, including purpose, meaning, object of study, study method, and the strengths and weaknesses of the current system. In addition, this chapter will analyze Korean high school Chinese teaching research’s circumstances as well. The next chapter will use Gwang-ju high school as a sample to analyze the current teaching methods for Chinese language in Korea at the high school level. By using literature review and questionnaire survey, it will help us to realize the issues with Korean high school Chinese with regards to teachers, students, course design, textbooks, content of courses, and teaching methods. The third chapter will utilize surveys to analyze the flaws in the current system, including course design, textbooks, content of courses, and teaching method. After the analysis, it will provide some suggestions as well. Finally, the last chapter will draw general conclusions regarding the research on Chinese language education at the high school level.
