Reading is one of the four basic skills(listening, speaking, reading and writing) of language learning, and reading competence directly determines students’ academic achievement. After the reform of the New Curriculum, junior 3 students are required to read more than before. According to New English Curriculum Standard which was published by Education Department of China in 2011, the junior middle school students are required to read materials other than that included in the textbooks, totaling over 150,000 words. Unfortunately, it is a common phenomenon of “high input, low output” in reading teaching. Through questionnaires and reading tests, it is obvious that the lack of reading strategy training is one of the main reasons. Therefore, reading strategy training is of course an indispensable part of English teaching and learning. This paper starts with the importance of reading competence and the present situation of reading teaching and learning, and then it introduces the significance of the application of the reading strategy into practical. Secondly, the definition and classification of language learning strategy and reading strategy as well as some empirical researches at home and abroad are described. Then, this paper analyzes the concepts and applications of six kinds of reading strategies through teaching samples, and illustrates the role of reading strategies in reading comprehension, which fully affirmed the necessity of reading strategy training. Last, the data collected from the two reading tests and questionnaires are analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. According to the results of data analysis, the effectiveness and rationality of reading strategy training are confirmed convincingly. Reading strategy training has a positive influence on junior 3 students in improving their reading proficiency and arousing their awareness of applying reading strategies. Meanwhile, it can provide implications for both teachers and students on how to improve reading proficiency in the future.
