As an precise and effective method to spread mathematical information, competence in mathematical communication becomes a new important aspect of mathematics teaching. However, it is not optimistic in view of students’ heavy load and pressure. This thesis, guided by related theories, tentatively attempts to do research on mathematical communication in mathematics teaching in senior high schools. After introducing the internal and external literature on mathematical communication, the author first gives the definition of mathematical communication and then analyze the present situation among students of liberal arts with different methods—questionnaire, interviewing and case study. It is believed that there are several factors accounting for students’ poor competence in mathematical communication: heavy load, parent-like teacher-student relations, difficulty in transforming mathematical language and differences in individual thinking.Based on the analysis of present situation and factors of mathematical communication, the thesis deals with effective strategies to cultivate students’ competence in mathematical communication. Firstly, teachers should improve teaching efficiency in class and create an atmosphere where students are ready to communicate.Secondly, teachers should build up an equal relation where teachers and students learn from each other. Thirdly, teachers should organize activities of mathematical communication without ignoring the individual differences.
