In recent years, English teaching and research in our country has achieved great progress. The overall English level of the students has been greatly improved. However, with the expanding of high schools and vocational high schools in cities, the student source of rural senior high schools is shrinking year by year. In those schools, the number of students with learning difficulties in English is increasing. As a teacher in a rural high school, the author finds that effective recitation is suitable for students and it can increase their confidence and interest in learning English. In recent years, with the great development of the research of foreign language teaching methods, the empirical study of recitation has been greatly developed. Based on the previous studies which demonstrate the effectiveness of recitation in foreign language learning, the thesis studies the actual situation and the specific application of English recitation in a rural senior high school from the perspective of a case. First of all, the author carried on a questionnaire survey to 36 students of Grade 1 in a rural senior high school to investigate the following three levels about students’ recitation: attitude, cognition and practical application. Then the author creatively put forward the method of mind mapping in English reciting. Based on this improved strategy, the author selected two classes and did an experiment on them for two months. The author used New Concept English 2 as the teaching material and guided students in the experimental class to recite the texts in the book with the help of self-made mind maps. The post test of the two classes after the end of the experiment and the comparative analysis of the post questionnaires and interviews of the students in the experimental class show that mind mapping can make students focus more on the recitation and make review easy and interesting thus improving the effect of students’ recitation and their performances on English learning.
