Geography is the scientific study of geographical phenomenon, process, characteristics of the earth and the distribution of mutual relationship of human and the nature in space and time. The new curriculum standard stresses the cultivation of high school students’ geospatial ability. Thus, students’geospatial thinking ability is one of the essential cultivate abilities in geography teaching no matter from the angle of the nature of the disciplinary or the course requirements. Therefore, how to cultivate high school students’geospatial thinking ability in geography teaching is a problem deserves to think deeply for most teachers and to study for the researchers in this field. Geographic information technology, as a third language of geography, has the very superiority in the space visibility to cultivate students’spatial thinking ability.In this paper, the author studies relevant researches on the cultivation of geospatial thinking ability at home and abroad, defines the content geospatial thinking ability contains from the author’s point of view, and analyzes the advantages in training high school students’ geospatial thinking ability assisted by GIS technology. Based on it, the key teaching content of the natural, cultural and regional parts in high school geography subject and some important knowledge in college entrance examination are selected to conduct the specific research on the relevant geospatial positioning, imagination and comprehensive analysis. Then, in view of the existing problems, an important information system is proposed based on the GIS technology on how to effectively promote high school students’ geospatial thinking ability, not only including the specific strategies, but also the case studies and practical teaching activities, hoping to achieve better results in the practical teaching of geography.
