The secondary radical is not only one of the important contents of Junior school mathematics, but also one of the difficulties. We have learned the square root, the arithmetic square root as well as cube root when we learn the secondary radical.What is the secondary radical? IN fact, it is the square root of negative arithmetic, and it is a part of the real number, and it’s also the supplement and extension of algebraic expression and real knowledge. Learning the Secondary radical is to learn the functions and algebraic expression better.Based on the questionnaire and some interviews to 153 rural middle school students in Chongzhou Sichuan, this article investigated the Grade 8 students’ understanding of the definition, the nature and the application of the Secondary radical. This paper consists of 5 chapters. The first chapter is mainly about the problems and the significance of the research. Chapter 2 draws a conclusion from 4 aspects according to the existing research, and lays the foundation for the following research. Chapter 3 is mainly to get the students’ level of secondary radical through the analysis of the investigation and gets the corresponding conclusion by Communicating with students. Chapter 5 shows the disadvantages of the research and the future direction, according to the actual situation.
