The 21 st century is the critical period of higher education development in our country. How to create a world-class university becomes one of the most important problems which current development of higher education in China have to face. Since was established in 1891, Stanford University become a world-class university in only about 130 years. By now, it has become a western star which can complete with the established universities in the eastern United States and be praised as the Harvard of the western United States. In fact, Stanford University is just a little better local university in the western United States half a century ago. Stanford University didn’t appear in the "top ten" university list of United States until the end of 1960 s. This paper sought all the splendid history of Stanford University such as the origin, the development and the rise by two aspects. Focus on analysis in the period of the cold war; how Stanford catches the chance take part in military technology research, and rapid rise in just over 20 years. Stanford University according to their own resources, adjusts measures to local conditions, and makes bold exploration and innovation, to find a development path suitable for their own. In these ways, Stanford jumped into ranks among the top Universities. This article hopes to find the internal and external factors contribute to the development of Chinese by analysis the rapid rise of Stanford University in the early of the cold war, and provide the beneficial reference and enlightenment to our country to build a world-class university.Paper is divided into five parts:The first part: introduction. This part is mainly about the problem of this paper, the research significance, the core concept definition and analysis, literature review, the existing research problems and the characteristics of this research and the related research methods.The second part: Mainly on the development stage of the Stanford University, a simple sort, at present, the university has experienced the following stages: the establishment and initial development period, the rise of the rise of the period, tortuous development period, the comprehensive development period.The third part: Mainly carries on the analysis to the external cause of the rise of Stanford University. Including the historical turning point of the cold war, for the university provides opportunities for development; Federal Science and technology policy formulation and research provide legal and institutional guarantee; post-war military research funding, research provides financial security.The fourth part : Stanford University’s internal governance initiatives is discussed in detail. Mainly reflected in the following aspects: emphasize to apply their knowledge to "pragmatism" education philosophy; brings up the suggestions that "creating excellence spire plan" development strategy; give play to its geographical advantage, deepen the school enterprise is closely linked to give some about the; take the initiative to national defense projects, and actively participate in military technology research; vigorously carry out entrepreneurship education.The fifth part: mainly through the research and analysis of the internal and external factors of Stanford University, put forward some useful suggestions and inspirations for our country to establish the world first-class university.
