Based on literature review, life experience, survey, expertise's advises and through the analysis of the open questionnaire done to 218 undergraduates and the oral conversation with some others, this research put forwards a hypothesis on a theory of sports activity motives and further on compiles a preliminary questionnaire of these motives, thereby forming into a formal questionnaire after an analysis of exploratory factors through close questionnaire given to 381 targets. The author also checks out the credibility and efficacy of this self-complied test and applies it to the investigation on 724 university students with the formal diagram. And two discoveries are found as follows:1. Two sorts of motives are gotten with the help of analysis over the self-complied questionnaire, which include internal and external factors. The first category consists of five: study motivation, stimuli-pursuing motivation, success motivation, bodybuilding motivation, and ability motivation. The second kind is also composed of five, which are self-presentation motivation, eluding motivation, artistic motivation, communicative motivation, and spiritual motivation.2.The self-compiles questionnaire pays its credits to internal consistence, test-retest reliability, split-half, proposition and some related coefficient, and tests its efficiency from content and structure aspects. The result proves that this questionnaire has its reliability and effectiveness. Therefore, it can be further used as research measuring tool.3.This research analyzes the general features of these motives and trying out the differences and similarities among grade, gender, major, and enrollment resource of students, and then comes a conclusion that the questionnaire is comparatively in consistency with the tested investigation and existing fact. Consequently, the author holds an opinion that the questionnaire is essentially evidenced by its efficacy.
