The rise of the world economy during the 20th century has caused the rise of new industries. Technological inventions lead to more free time thus consumers could decide how to spend the extra income. Among the innovative activities that emerged, team sports, a multi-faceted form of entertainment combined fitness, quick thinking, and cooperation. This thesis will first analyze the social role of sports theory, then the economic role of the American football industry worldwide.. The United States is the first country to create American football sports industry proving the economic potential of the football industry. Through the economic success of the NFL as well as the shift in consumer preferences outside of the United States, international markets are able to imitate the American industry system and create their own. After understanding the way in which NFL became a successful industry in the United States, this Thesis will look into how football developed in the international community. Through the involvement of the United States in the 20th century wars, particularly its military strength, American soldiers introduced american football to Europeans and Asians. Football was especially played before and after the war when stationed troops were idle and used sports to pass the time. During this time, the American army taught locals how to play football. When the wars were complete and the American army returned home, local fans already emerged and stayed committed to the development of the sports. Although no organization outside of the NFL has been able to profit off of the interest in american football, amateur American football is seen in nearly all developed countries. The difficulty for sports leagues is turning the popularity of a sport into profits for the teams and league administrators. The purpose of writing this thesis is to better understand the manner in which the american football industry grows internationally, particularly how to activate this new industry in China. Today, there are relatively comprehensive operational mechanisms and management models for sports in several different marketplaces. Through introducing those experiences to China, China can also grow a strong sports industry and culture. In a market economy conditions, any development of a sport are inseparable from the operation of the market; different sports have different modes of operations in the market. In this regard, China is comparatively undeveloped. While some western sports, particularly soccer and basketball have become popular; there still exists room in the marketplace for new sports, sports players, and sports fans. With the right training and support, american football could have a place in the Chinese sports market. Among this thesis’s concluding ideas and suggestions, I discuss the connection between the popularity and profitability of american football in China. Every country has its own popular sports but these sports have no necessarily created an industry that has entered the market. The sports industry’s operation needs to be established before profits can be made. At the same time, sports that receive a large amount of support are not necessarily mainstream sports. For example, Olympic sports like diving race-walking and hammer throwing, because they are competed on an international level, the government is more willing to allocate resources toward its growth。The success of China’s american football industry lies in its ability to connect popularity and profits.Through the efforts of american football organizers, the rise of american football in China can be realized.Using my rich personal experience in developing American Football in China, I would like to provide useful opinions and suggestions in growing the marketplace. All research and analysis in this thesis is documented in order to promote the rapid development of american football in China.
