The functions of universities have been pushed forward from simplification to diversification with their evolution and development. Modern Universities possess three main functions including personnel training and scientific research. However, functions themselves have witnessed a tendency of alienation with their transformation.There are three dimensions in the alienation of university functions. First, three main functions introduced above deviate themselves gradually in the real university education. Second, scientific research, which originally serves the teaching, progressively parts from and displaces teaching as the basic function. Third, universities are contained by the subsystems of the society and their functions get expanded and polarized while the teaching function is squeezed and seriously ignored as a result of demand for social development. It is certain that the alienation conforms to purposes essentially and inevitably results from the interaction and gaming between university education and society although it deviates from and distorts the nature of universities with enormous detriment.The reality of alienation of university functions is shown in two aspects. On the one hand, using functions as the university classification standard, point out that classification criteria of modern universities depart from the essence of universities, separate academicality from practicality in knowledge, and the result is that caused the dislocation development of function orientation and the construction of research university of alienation phenomenon. On the other hand, the displacement lies in the core function of universities and scientific research takes the first place in fact.The alienation of university function is the result of joint influence and effect from interior and exterior factors of universities. The outer reasons are that the alienation is the inevitable outcome of the historical development, that real social atmosphere supplies fertile soil for the alienation, and that social system is incomplete. And the inner reasons are the deflection in the knowledge of the university nature, excessively utilitarian idea of operating universities, unstable basis of running universities independently, and bondage and inducement of university administration system.Three strategies are employed to evade the alienation. First, recognize and understand the nature of universities anew, and be definite about that the university is the place for organizing profound knowledge activities and the unity of academicality and practicality. Second, the unification of academicality and practicality in knowledge and the branches of university subjects are applied to reconstruct the classification standard of universities, and build the 3×4 classification and combination method integrating vertical and horizontal dimensions. Third, universities adhere to cultivating students foremost, returning to the nature of the teaching, and basing on teachers in operation. Moreover, teachers’work is focused on the teaching, and the center of the teaching is students, and the priority of students is the study.
