| Modern citizens, different from subjects and private people, are internally characterized by civil subjectivity and publicity and externally demonstrate on civil consciousness of rights and responsibility. Accordingly, civic awareness education can be defined as the civil education cultivating the consciousness of rights and responsibility.Chinese textbooks are the carrier and mission of implementation of civic awareness education. But we found in studies that the latest edition of Chinese textbooks for junior middle school cannot fully shoulder the responsibility of citizen consciousness education. It attaches more importance to cultivating citizen’s responsibility consciousness rather than rights consciousness. It ignores the importance of education in rights cognition and protection. On the citizen’s moral cultivation, the textbook still follows the traditional moral education, retaining the main content of cultivating high virtues such as selfless dedication. It also does not cultivate the consciousness of gender and ethnic equality.To enable Chinese textbooks to shoulder the responsibility of civic awareness education, Chinese textbook makers need to build up educational idea of modern citizens, adjust the textbook contents and value the cultivation of subject spirit, rights awareness, citizen morality and equality consciousness. At the same time, First-line teachers also need to be clear about the content of civic awareness education, on the basis of which they should fully excavate the contents of textbooks and use a rich variety of teaching methods to help students to establish correct and comprehensive civil consciousness. |
