The new curriculum standards require that students don’t only to get hold of the basic mathematical concepts, mathematical methods and mathematical thinking, and paying greater attention to deepen understanding of contact between the relatively independent knowledge systematic and structured. Function is the key of the high school mathematics curriculum content, lays the foundation for the students to learn high school mathematics knowledge. Concept map is a visual tool that can provide an effective way of learning for students, faculties the students’ creative ability and thinking ability. In this paper, we introduce the concept map into the high school function teaching, and explore its application value.First of all, the research understand the high school students’understanding of the concept for the function by using the questionnaire survey, and analyzed the problems and misunderstanding of the students. Secondly, according to the findings, used the concept map to improve the teaching design in detail for the existing problems. Finally, to test the effect of concept map in the teaching, used the method of contrast experiment in the teaching of function with concept map teaching design. In addition, used the case study method to analysis for individual students and tracked students’ using of concept maps in function learning.Based on the investigation and analysis, the conclusion is obtained that the problem exists in the object stage and the schema stage of the students in the function study. Therefore, the optimization design of function teaching is carried out by using the visual tool of concept map. In order to verify the effect of the improved teaching design, used the concept map teaching design and conducted a case study for two kinds of students. The following conclusions were obtained, Firstly, the high school students is still failed to reach the object stage and the requirements of the schematic stage in the understanding of the concept of function. Secondly, the concept map can effectively improve the function understanding object and schematic phase. Thirdly, the concept map reviews an obvious effect to help students. Students with more flexible learning style can easier to develop the function of concept map tools.
