Vocabulary is the carrier of speech sounds, meaning and grammar. The more vocabulary one masters, the better ability to catch effective information he can get. In the meanwhile, the ability to listen, speak, read and write can be improved correspondingly with the expansion of the vocabulary. Thus, it is a very important factor to improve the foreign language by mastering the vocabulary. The paper explores the senior school students’difficulties in learning the vocabulary through questionnaire and test, analyses the cause and searches for the useful solutions. Aiming at relieving the students’learning burden and developing the students’ ability of self-learning, the paper can help students learn and master the vocabulary with ease and happiness and enrich their vocabulary to achieve the goal of properly using the vocabulary.In the paper, the targets of the questionnaires and tests are the students in Grade Two of senior high school. The questionnaires include the senior school students’vocabulary learning conditions and the tests contain English vocabulary acquired by students of Grade Two when they are in Grade One, such as verbs, nouns and collocations of verbs and prepositions. According to the questionnaires and tests, students believe that vocabulary learning is important, but they don’t spend much time on it. They have got no interest and initiatives in their vocabulary learning. Therefore, they can not gain a lot in their vocabulary learning. During their vocabulary learning, the methods they use are limited and are not effective to help them memorize firmly. It’s easy to make mistakes especially when they spell the words that are of the same or similar spellings and meanings but of different usages.They can not completely master the vocabulary and correctly use the acquired vocabulary, even if they have memorized the spellings and meanings of the vocabulary. The students have the thought of taking the shortcuts and lack the perseverance in the process of vocabulary learning. Furthermore, teachers adopt simple approach and ignore students’ acceptability to complete the planned teaching tasks in vocabulary teaching. Moreover, they emphasize memorization but not use in the process.Based on the problems above, the methods of vocabulary teaching have been explored and optimized in the teaching procedures. Besides, the previous teaching experiences should be summarized and a set of practical strategies of senior school English vocabulary teaching should be explored. The strategies include memorizing the vocabulary according to the rules of pronunciation, word-formation and association. The vocabulary can be enlarged and used by setting certain tasks, creating authentic contexts, refining the reading materials, guessing the meaning of the vocabulary from the contexts and so on.Some improvements can be made in the teaching process by adopting all the strategies illustrated above. The students can improve their vocabulary learning, enlarge their vocabulary and strengthen their ability of comprehension and language use.
