| School is an organization which is able to unite individuals within the society. Traditionally, the school has 4 intrinsic functions namely the cultural, social, political and economical functions. Education is a strategy used to achieve goals mentioned above whereas mother tongue is the main medium when conducting educational processes. Since ancient time, the Chinese as well as the overseas Chinese emphasize on education. The Chinese Education in Malaya started to grow following by the migration of the Chinese to this land in the late 18th century. It has gone through a few challenging stages. During the British Colonization, it has to feed itself but yet has grown to an organization that can shook the regime. It was forced to reform during the early stage of country establishment. Till now, due to the faint political power of the Chinese, the existence of Chinese Education is always being threaten by the changeable policies of this country. In fact, the history of the Chinese Education in Malaysia is a record that shows how the Chinese has struggled and combated for protecting it. The aim of this article is to study the development of Chinese Education in Sitiawan which can be considered as the review of the development of Chinese Education in this nation. Study will be done based on the historical aspect to investigate the driving force of the Foochows in protecting their Mother-tongue Education.The role of textbooks is significant in education. Political factors have a great influence in arrangement of the contents of the textbooks. At the early stage of Chinese Education in Malaya, teachers and textbooks were imported from China. As it evolves, the editing of the textbooks became localized to suit the changeable environment. This article will hence investigate the influences of political factors towards the evolution of the textbooks used in Chinese school by analyzing the contents of a few sets of textbooks.The ancestors of Chinese have sacrificed and contributed their lives to develop Malaysia. Upon the independence of this country for more than half a decade, the Chinese citizenship is recognized by the constitution but sadly to see that there are hyper-nationalists who always make sensitive statements to provoke the Chinese. This immature civic consciousness will lead to self-destruction of the country. The establishment of civic consciousness is closely related to the education whereby it rely on the educational policy. Herewith this article will also study the effects of Civic Education and History taught in school in the cultivation of civic awareness in Malaysians. Finally, this article will suggest a few ways to cease the divergence between races in Malaysia. Lastly, this article will also discuss the prospects of Chinese Education in Malaysia. |
