As one of the fundamental subjects of junior and senior high school, English, in a way, determines the future development of a student. Whether for the entrance examinations or future job hunting, English is now playing a more and more important role. Owing to the differences between junior and senior English, an increasing serious problem emerges--divergence, which has a bad effect on the English teaching and learning in senior high school. Some freshmen have difficulty in adapting to new English teachers, new textbooks, new teaching and learning methods. Besides, some teachers in seniors schools pays little attention to the coherence between junior and senior English. All these contribute to the faultage of English teaching and learning. Thus, inevitably influences the efficiency of English teaching activity. Junior English focuses on the evaluation of students’ memory, while senior English emphasizes the cultivation of one’s ability in vocabulary, grammar, four basic English skills and so on. So it is our major issue to solve the problem of adapting every student to the new surroundings smoothly.English teaching and learning is a progressive, yet continuous process, which demands that when teaching and learning English, we must lay emphasis on not only the periodicity, but also the integrity. However, in reality, some junior and senior teachers fail to realize the integrity of the language. In addition, students in senior are easy to find themselves in a more stressful situation. Then negative emotions arise, which restrict the learning efficiency of students. Therefore, as English teachers, we are supposed to take effective measures to deal with the problem and it brooks no delay. Only in this way can we increase the efficiency of English teaching and learning and help students to adapt to senior high school smoothly and quickly.The researcher made some investigation into the transition of the English teaching and learning from junior to senior school. In the dissertation, the researcher chose 140 students and a few teachers in Chongqing Fuling No.5 Middle School as the research objects. Through the research, I found some problem in the transition process and to ensure a smooth transition, the following suggestions are made:For students:1). Pay attention to the psychological counseling of students so as to develop healthy mentality;2). Exert students’ subjective initiative to develop good learning habits;3). Attach importance to the guidance of learning methods to foster scientific learning methods.For teachers:1). Raise awareness of coherence in order to reinforce the transition from junior to senior high school;2). Respect reality and avoid being unrealistic;3).
