Research On Astronomical Education And Brief Astronomy Of Teng Chou College

Teng Chou college is the earliest university in modern Chinese history which was established by the foreign missionaries. Teng Chou college’s first president was Calvin Wilson mateer(Calvin Wilson mateer, 1836 ~ 1908). 1864 witnessed the opening of Teng Chou college’s missionary work and education in China which was named Tengchou Boy’s Boarding School at that time. It’s education mode and contents of astronomy in China should be considered as the most advanced and cutting-edge one in the West, and the textbook Brief Astronomy was written by the second president Watson Mc Millen Hayes(Watson Mc Millen Hayes, 1857- 1944) according to A Treatise on Astronomy which was a widespread astronomical textbook in western at that time. The content of Brief Astronomy was concise and easy to understand with rigorous logic. Brief Astronomy was an influential book after Talk about Astronomy. The paper briefly summarized the history of Teng Chou college, and mainly analyzed astronomy education of it, English version of it, and comparison with Talk about Astronomy.(1)The paper briefly introduced the situation of western missionaries in China in late Qing Dynasty, and divided it into three time periods and made the descriptions respectively, made an overview of the ins history and described the education mode and condition.(2)The paper summarized the astronomy education of Teng Chou college, and described the main courses and the talent training mode.(3)Comparing the Brief Astronomy and A Treatise on Astronomy, the paper found the differences in structure and content of them. Through description, comparison and analysis, the paper reached a final conclusion.(4)For the first time, the paper compared the translations of the Brief Astronomy and Talk about Astronomy, and summarized six main distinctions.(5)The paper carefully analyzed the terminologies of astronomy, and discusses the changes of terminologies after the use of Brief Astronomy.(6)Finally, the paper analyzes the influence of the Brief Astronomy and Teng Chou college’s astronomy education in China, and gives the objective evaluation.
