With the recent ubiquitous rise of large-scale affordable housing construction in China, there is the growing demand for elderly care catering to the senior residents in these communities. Currently, community-based home care is becoming the main method for the social pension in the country. However, the facilities, services and regulatory policies for the elderly still need to be improved. In light of this situation, this paper selects seven large-scale affordable housing communities in Nanjing as cases, investigating on the current situation of community-based home care. The study takes root from the fundamental characteristics of affordable housing as well as the behavior need of the aging group, analysing the emerging problems in the aspects of housing allocation, entertainment and medical care facilities. Eventually, by taking the successful cases and policies in Western and East Asian developed countries and regions as reference, a series of design strategies is proposed in attempt to ameliorate the current situation of community-based home care and create a better living environment for the senior residents in the affordable housing communities. There are five chapters in this dissertation:Chapter 1 introduces the background, the target group, the methods as well as the references of the research; Chapter 2 summarizes the housing security and the community-based home care policy in Western and East Asian countries. Some affordable housing communities in Hongkong and Japan are used as case studies for further exploration on this issue; Chapter 3 investigates on seven affordable housing communities in Nanjing. The current situation of these communities are categorized and analysed based on the immediate need of the low-income senior residents, and the emerging problems facing elderly care of this age group are analysed in depth; Chapter 4 bases on what is consolidated in chapter 2 and comes up with a series of design strategies that aim to tackle the problems concluded in chapter 3; Chapter 5 summarizes the limitations faced in the research work and looks into areas for future improvement.
