As for English learners, reading is not only the most important way to get the information, but also the basis and insurance to improve students’ language skills including listening, speaking and writing. In College Entrance Examination, the scores of reading account for the largest proportion. However, most students are not good at reading comprehension. Therefore, it is necessary for schools and teachers to help students improve their reading competence, especially students in countryside.As far as my school is concerned, it is located in the countryside. On account of the study conditions here, the students begin to learn English quite late and have low competence of English. In addition, most of students do not have good reading habit and are lack of appropriate reading strategies. On the other hand, owing to various factors,most of teachers tend to apply the traditional teaching method to the class, focusing on the basic knowledge, like grammar and words, which give rise to students’ dislike. It is obvious that the reason for that is mainly because students do not grasp proper method of English reading and teachers do not have proper teaching. The experiment has been conducted on students in my two classes for one semester. One is the control class which the traditional method is used in, and the other one is the experiment class which the task-based language teaching approach is applied to method to improve students’ reading ability. Therefore, in order to arouse students’ interest in learning English and improve their reading abilities, this thesis will attempt to apply task-based language teaching approach in teaching reading.This research tries to test whether the task-based language teaching approach is more effective in arousing students’ interest and improving their reading competence. The conclusion then is reached: Task-based language teaching approach can not only arouse the interest of students but also improve English reading ability of the students.
