As one of the three basic elements of language, vocabulary is very important in learning English. Nowadays, many middle school students are faced with the problems of boring vocabulary teaching, recite but soon forget, low vocabulary learning efficiency, lack of learning initiative, and so on. Therefore, it is imperative for teachers to seek a scientific and effective teaching mode to improve students’ vocabulary performance. Cooperative learning is an effective way to cultivate students’ ability to use language and promote the communication between students. It has been recognized and widely accepted around the world. As one of the cooperative learning modes, STAD can promote the interaction between teachers and students, and arouse students’ interest and enthusiasm in learning English. And vocabulary is the most important part of learning language. It is necessary to practice the practical feasibility of the cooperative mode in vocabulary teaching in Urumqi, Xinjiang.This study is based on social interdependence theory, recently developed area theory, motivation theory and refined cognitive theory, use STAD cooperative learning mode to teach vocabulary in grade 2 of No.19 Middle School in Urumqi. Through the results of the previous test volume, randomly selected Class 1 as the experimental class, Class 2 as the control class. After a period of three months of English vocabulary teaching, the scores of experimental class have been greatly improved, comparing with the control class. The significant level P<0.05.The research result shows that: STAD cooperative learning mode can improve students’ vocabulary learning achievement through cooperative learning, group cooperation and competition among groups. It stimulated students’ learning enthusiasm.
