With the coming of the era of integrated logistics, port as a core node in globaltransportation chain has transformed its function from traditional transshipment by loadingand unloading cargos to an integrated logistic center. It is an inevitable trend that port willdevelop its own logistic service in the future. Now Pearl River Delta region is one of thefastest growing areas with largest total economy in China, and Guangzhou is making effort tobuild the National Center City and Asian logistic center. In recent years, Guangzhou PortGroup firmly grasps the opportunities of implementation of Pearl River Delta RegionDevelopment Plan and rapid economic and social growth. We are vigorously developingcontainer logistic business and have achieved significant breakthrough. The throughput isgrowing year by year. However some problems still exist such as insufficient containerthrough capability, lack of machinery and equipment and high competitive pressure. Thehealthy development of container logistic business can be seriously influenced ifcountermeasures were not taken.The paper firstly introduced the research background and research status, and explainedthe content and research methods. Based on the analysis of development status and trends ofdomestic and international container logistic business, the paper briefly introduced the basicsituation of Guangzhou Port Group and focused on the business composition, domestic andinternational container business, current problems and their causes in the Group. Then thecompetitive environment of container logistic business was analyzed. We used PESTAnalysis to explore external environment in Pearl River Delta region and summarized thestrengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of container logistic business in the Groupwith SWOT Analysis.Based on previous analysis and combining with the research of port economicdevelopment, we made a forecast of domestic and international container production,throughput of Guangzhou Port Group by hinterland production method and trend analysismethod, which provided effective database for Group’s future container business. Accordingto the forecast, the throughput of Group container will reach to15million TEU by2015andby2020the number will be20.2million TEU while a large gap still exists between existingcontainer terminal capability and future target.Through the above analysis, we proposed the positioning, objectives and strategies ofcontainer logistics business in Guangzhou Port Group. Eight strategies including low-costoperation, Nansha business extension, strategic alliances, optimal resources allocation, integrated logistics, developing international trade, dry port building and government supportwere summarized according to the analysis of development status and competitiveenvironment. In order to ensure its smooth implementation, the paper also proposed sixconcrete measures i.e. speeding up the container through capability building, developingintegrated port logistics, promoting service brand, improving port environment andaccelerating logistical personal training.
