Manufacturing industry is the pillar industry of national economy and also atypical technology-intensive industry, its overall capacity and technical level is directlyrelated to the speed and quality of the national economy development. At present, themode of product development based on platform has been widely used in themanufacturing worldwide as the product platform can produce a series of derivativeproducts to meet the requirements of different market segments. In order to improve thecompetitiveness of manufacturing enterprises and make it last, an effective method is toincrease the number of product derivatives, which can make the enterprise gain anability of the competitiveness of product platform competency, and enhance competitiveadvantage through the product platform competency. So the research of antecedents andits impact of the number of product platform derivatives have important theoreticalsignificance and practical significance.This study based on the Organization Theory, the Human Resource Theory Basedon the Ability, Technological Innovation Theory, and after present and summed theresearch of scholars both domestic and overseas, in this study, constructs the mechanismmodel of the antecedents and its impact of number of product derivatives, mainlystudied the platform-based product development process and the champion inplatform-based product development have influence on the number of product platformderivatives. And the two independent variables of interaction are play a adjust actioneach other, in other words, because of the existence of a champion in platform-basedproduct development, platform-based product development process can have a stronginfluence on the number of product platform derivatives, and vice versa.Therefore, if the enterprise wants to improve the number of product platformderivatives, enhance the competitiveness of product platform, this would require theenterprise gives an adequate attention to the formalized platform-based productdevelopment process and existence of a champion in platform-based productdevelopment, and this study also provides reference for decision-making from atrade-off view. Such as formulate relevant regulations and policies, using computersoftware such as ERP, PDM to manage the development process, introducing andtraining of talent to work, make sure that have a formalized platform-based product development process and one or more champions in platform-based productdevelopment, so it can significantly improve the number of product platformderivatives.
