Outdoor recreation motivation and preference, as two of the most critical factors, are the determinants whether people go to participate in outdoor recreation. Considering about this, this article aims to grasp residents’outdoor recreation and preference on the one hand, and discusses the relationship among people’s individual characteristics, outdoor recreation motivation and preference on the other hand. On the basis of literature review, this research made a questionnaire investigation on residents in Changsha, and343effective questionnaires were obtained.Through the statistical analysis of data obtained, the results showed:(1) the outdoor recreation motivation of residents in Changsha could be divided into two kinds, they were relaxing and enjoy and self improvement, with the first one which including pressure-release and natural scenery-appreciation as the most important; Residents had a rather active attitude toward outdoor recreation participation and a significant preference to the outdoor recreation states, facilities, activities, products and requirements for destinations.(2) the demographic characteristics of residents in Changsha had a significant influence on their outdoor recreation motivation and preference:when the gender or monthly income differed, their outdoor recreation motivation also changed; and six variables including gender, age, occupation, education level, monthly income and marital status affect residents’outdoor recreation preference significant.(3)there’s no significant relationships between the two kinds of residents’outdoor recreation motivation and their intention to participate, preference for activities and requirements for destinations, however, a significant correction did exist between the motivations and the preference for states and products:the stronger residents’motivation of relaxing and enjoy was, the bigger the preference for scenic area and forest park; the stronger residents’motivation of self improvement, the bigger the preference for the Botanical Garden of Hunan Province.The results in this paper could provide reference for related enterprises on the one hand, by knowing the specific outdoor recreation motivation and preference, marketable products could be designed so as to enhance the intention of residents to participate; on the other hand, on the basis of this article, objective accordance were provided for municipal administration to perfect the present outdoor recreation products system, thus improving residents’sense of happiness.
