Chinese auto industry has obtained attract worldwide attention performance sincefrom1953the first automobile factory established, now after more than60years ofdevelopment. In2012, China has become the world’s first place country of autoproduction and consumption. But under the prosperous situation, the key technology isfar behind, always depend on foreign technology. China is an auto world, but not autopower. Auto power is able to create the world’s leading products, because of its solidR&D base, a lot of R&D teams and world-class universities. For the economicallybackward countries, if they walk the path of technological innovation will meet thepatent of standards and technical barriers to trade that the leading countries made thenresult in the loss of development space. A lot of literature and research shows, countrieswith relatively backward technology, although the influence of brand and technologystrength are no match for leading countries, but also have the advantages in innovation.They have lower innovation cost, faster learning speed and lower risk. This article is tointroduce the Catch-down technology innovation, which is fit for the status of enterprisein developing countries. Using the Catch-down technology innovation path has highersuccess rate than the direct original innovation. At the beginning of the path, enterprisesthrough the imitation innovation to carry on small scale innovation and cost innovation,in order to obtain a large market share. Secondly, enterprises accumulate strength toestablish the independent innovation goals. And then through the cooperative innovationto learn advanced technology, for the sake of expand market space. From this perspective,the path of low-end market is more stable than the path of high-end market. The latterwould face disadvantages of technical barriers and anti-dumping cases. And it’s hard tobear huge investment and the risk. So, improving the ability of technical innovation ofChinese automobile enterprise and choosing suitable technology innovation path play avital role in making China from auto world to auto power.Based on the related theory of technology innovation, summarized and used allkinds of innovation pattern and path, started from the difference between catch-up andcatch-down technology innovation, this article introduce catch-down technologyinnovation path by definition, modeling and testing. In the first part of the paper introduces the background, significance, method, content and frame of the research. Thefirst chapter outlines the related theory, the concept of catch-down’s origin, the summaryof the Chinese automobile enterprises’ technology innovation path. The second chapterintroduces the phenomenon, concept and characteristics of the catch-down technologyinnovation, summarising the differences among kinds of technology innovation,establishing catch-down technology innovation path model. The third chapter choosesGeely represented Chinese private automobile enterprises to analyse the feature ofcatch-down technology innovation path, and to check the feasibility and reliability of thepath. The fourth chapter puts forward some suggestions based on the revelations ofChinese automobile enterprise catch-down technology innovation. The fifth chapter ofthe paper introduces main work, the lack of the article and talks about the prospect onthis field.
