Guangxi Beibu Gulf Area Of Public Scientific Literacy Improvement Research

In current society which is driven by science and technology, public scientific literacy plays a very important role in people’s daily lives. To accelerate the process of modernization in China, we should not only further develop our science and technology, but also attach great importance of the activities which can help us to popularize the development of our science and technology as well as to improve the public scientific literacy. Scientific literacy symbolizes people’s personal quality, is very important for individual survival and individual overall development. It is of great significance to up-grading the public scientific literacy for building a sustainable society in an all-round way. Reaping the benefits of it, we can help the public to improve their capabilities to gain and apply knowledge, to better their well-being, to facilitate their development in all dimensions, and to drive forward the construction of harmonious socialist society of our country.Guangxi lies in the southwest of China, is one of most convenient ports in China access to the sea, and plays a very important role in economy and bilateral trade between China and ASEAN countries. Guangxi, as an indispensable part of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area(CAFTA), is very important to the exchanges between China and the ASEAN countries. China-ASEAN Expo is held annually in the capital of Guangxi province-Nanning since2004, containing three major sectors:investment and cooperation, commodity trade and service trade, serving as a new platform for the economic development between China and all the ASEAN countries. The expo facilitates the development of Guangxi, particularly in Beibu Gulf area. This research mainly investigated and analyzed the status of public scientific literacy in Beibu Gulf area by methods of literature analysis and field survey, and then come up with some strategies so as to improve the public scientific literacy in Beibu Gulf region in accordance with the status quo of this area and the great context of the establishment of the CAFTA.The first part is introduction. In this chapter, the importance of the public scientific literacy in such an information society was discussed, which exerts great influence on China’s core competence in worldwide, is one of the criteria of building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, and impacts the public’s well-being directly. This research pointed out its significance and methodologies, combining with some other related researches both at home and in abroad.The second part is about the existing relative researches and investigations in China, including those of Guangxi, describing the process of formation and development of the public scientific literacy, reviewing the status of all the domestic relevant researches, providing as a reference to later related researches of Beibu Gulf region of Guangxi.The third part analyzed the status quo of the public scientific literacy in Beibu Gulf area in Guangxi. This chapter investigated the public scientific literacy in Beibu Gulf area of Guangxi on the basis of theoretical analysis, focusing on the people’s understanding toward scientific knowledge, scientific approaches and relationship between science and society, quantitative measured the public scientific literacy in this region. The findings of this research demonstrated that the current public scientific literacy there is relatively good, however, the public scientific literacy among different groups are quite different due to its special geographic condition.The fourth part refers to under the background of china-asean free trade area, guangxi beibu gulf region of the challenges facing the public science literacy. This chapter set forth the develop process of this region. CAFTA was launched in an all-round way on January1,2010, benefiting both China and the ASEAN countries, especially to the Beibu Gulf region of Guangxi with positive significance. With the development of the new situation, the development of asean free trade area public scientific literacy in the beibu gulf region put forward higher standards and requirements, in a fully competitive in the international competition environment, the standards and requirements increased the beibu gulf region of the challenges facing the public science literacy.The fifth part concerning on strategies for enhancing the public scientific literacy in Beibu Gulf area of Guangxi. In this chapter, countermeasures to improving the public scientific literacy in this area were presented based on all the previous studies of this one, that is to build a sound social atmosphere for it, to spread popular science by arranging more activities, to accelerate multi-participation, to deepen educational systematic reform, to strengthening the communication of scientific knowledge through mass media, and to make greater effort to the cause of scientific literacy in ethnic minority areas.
