Forestry Ideology And Practice Of Chen Rong

Chen Rong was a famous arborist and forestry educator. Influenced by ethos of Saving the Country Through Science, he studied in Japan and Europe, and devoted himself to forestry education and scientific research, and made great contribution in the development of modern forestry and forestry education in China. He linked theory with practice, built a silviculture theory integrated Chinese and Western and proposed "Afforestation First". His forestry ideology and practice mainly includes three aspects:In forestry education, he learned from foreign advanced education theory, established forestry college, hold the post of dean of forest department, as well as compiled forestry textbooks, optimized forestry curriculum, hired famous forestry experts and scholars, to cultivate forestry talents and improve the forestry education system. In addition, Chen Rong set up experimental forest farms, demonstration forest farms, specimen rooms and laboratories. He was the initiator and organizers of the Agricultural Association of China and Chinese Society of Forestry. Meanwhile he also started the "Journal of Agricultural Association of China","Forest Science" and other journals to communicate and expand forestry thoughts and science. In forestry science and technology, Chen Rong was the founder of tree taxonomy in China and pioneer of silviculture theory and practice with Chinese characteristics. He compiled "Tree Taxonomy in China"," Bamboo Cultivation and Utilization","The Principal silviculture ","Special Topics of the Silviculture ", and " Forestry Chronicle of China" which won him huge reputation. In forestry policy and management, he put forward specific suggestion on forestry policy:afforestation by people while supporting by government, learning the experience from other countries while linking with social situation of China. After the founding of P.R. China, he himself in forestry construction, and participated in many important policy discussion.
