Research On Marketization And Development Of Metropolitans

China has put forward to build influential metropolitan areas based on big cities and middle-sized cities in the12th five-year plan. Metropolitan areas in the Midwest are proposed to become an important growth in promoting balanced development and leading regional economic development in "The National New Urbanization Plan (2014-2020)". Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi are putting forward to build metropolitan area of Middle Reach of Yangtze River (MRYR) including27cities in Wuhan Metropolitan Area, Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan City Group and Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Region, where Wuhan, Changsha Nanchang play the core role. Li Keqiang suggested that Anhui should be put in the MRYR in December,2012and therefore the MRYR are expanded to40cities.The concept of metropolitan area has been studied for years and many scholars have put forward different standards. Neither metropolitan area nor the MRYR is clearly defined in China. Whether several small metropolitan areas can form a big metropolitan area or not still reamains to be discussed, which is the major concern of the paper.This paper selects the market, which is one of the stakeholders, as the viewpoint to study the problem. First we build index system to measure cities’marketization and analyze the distribution characteristics. Then we compare provincial capitals’ marketization with other cities’to determine the role of the capitals within and beyond the provinces. At last combining the development and cognition of four provinces, we get the area of the MRYR divided.The conclusions of the paper are as follows. Wanjiang Area is more suitable for docking the Yangtze River Delta development because of its present development, orientation and cognition. However, the economic power of Poyang Lake ecological economic region is not very strong as Nanchang as the biggest city in Jiangxi has little influence on other cities. So the economic power of Poyang Lake Ecological Economic Region is not suggested to join the MRYR now and maybe can join it later. Since there is big gap of marketization among Wuhan, Changsha and other cities, market integration of Wuhan Metropolitan Area and Changsha-Zhuzhou-Xiangtan City Group is not completed. But due to the stronger cognition of Hubei and Hunan, the two areas can be built into the MRYR now or later.
