Under globalization and localization, regionalization in economy structure become increasingly evident. Regional economy which based on metropolitan circle occupies a pivotal position in the frameworkof national economic strategy. In the process of urbanization in China, the role of metropolitan circle in regional economy development is also increasingly apparent. Urbanization strategy pattern of our country has been built Twelfth Five-Year Plan, and it proposed Build bridge channels, two horizontal channels along the Yangtze River to the coast, Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Harbin, Kunming channels as three vertical axis. Relying on several important urban agglomeration in the axis, form the urbanization strategy pattern which constitute other urbanization area. In this context, this study clarified the concept of metropolitan, systematically combed and summarized the research process of the metropolitan theory, studied the development of co-opetition in Yangtze River Delta, determined the direction for future development of metropolitan area, and promoted forming the spatial pattern of urbanization and regional economic development. The trend of economic globalization and localization have made the co-opetition strengthened among regions and within regions, especially in the current era of modern knowledge economy and network economy, this form of co-opetition is more diverse and complex. Therefore, how to effectively coordinate this level of co-opetition among regions to make the maximum effect, which is also urgent problem to be solved of every region. Based on this background, this paper analyzed the development of co-opetition between Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta, in order to provide suggestions for the co-opetition development of the Yangtze River Delta in the future. The specific research ideas are:Firstly, it made quantitative analysis of the economic relations between Shanghai and other cities in the in Yangtze River Delta by building a gravity model of spatial interaction. Then, it combed the different stages of co-opetition development between Shanghai and other cities in the region from the aspects of the governments, economies and infrastructure, and found out some of the problems in the process of co-opetition development. Finally, it put forward reasonable paths to the co-opetition development between Shanghai and other cities in Yangtze River Delta. In this paper, it made conclusions as follow:Firstly, from early days of the foundation of P.R.C to Shanghai Expo, economic relations between Shanghai and other cities in the region gradually strengthened. The cities which located near Shanghai made more closely link with Shanghai while other edge cities showed less closed economic relations with Shanghai, which expanded the difference of the degree of coopetiton between Shanghai and other cities in Yangtze River Delta. Secondly, the competition and cooperation were different in four phases of the development process of co-opetition between Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. In primary integration phase, competition was slight. Then, cooperation was greater than competition in imbalanced growth phase. In multi-center development phase, competition exceed the cooperation. And in regional co-opetition phase, the interaction between competition and cooperation promoted the development of the whole Yangtze River Delta. The paper was divided into six chapters:The first chapter was an introduction to the background, significance, relevant concept definition, methods, contents and the main innovation point of the article. The second chapter was the analysis of domestic and foreign relevant theory and research progress, which sorted out the regional co-opetition theory, growth pole theory, spatial interaction theory, polycentric region theory and regional economic integration theory. The third chapter analyzed the economic integration between Shanghai and other cities, which is one of the important part of the article. On the basis of the Gravity Model, it concluded that the economic relations between Shanghai and other cities in the circle presented a tendency of growing. The forth chapter discussed the co-opetition development between Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta. Based on the research of city circle development phase by Friedmann, Hu Xuwei and Gao Ruxi, it divided the development of Yangtze River Delta into four phase. Then, it combed the different stages of co-opetition development between Shanghai and other cities in the region from the aspects of the governments, economies and infrastructure, and found out some of the problems in the process of co-opetition development. The fifth chapter put forward the path selection of co-opetition development between Shanghai and other cities in Yangtze River Delta. It proposed the four paths for the co-opetition development between Shanghai and other cities in Yangtze River Delta in the future, including improving the communication and coordination mechanism of Yangtze River Delta, creating a convenient and three-dimensional transportation network, arranging a reasonable division system of the urban industry, enhancing the accumulation and dispersion effect of the primate city. The sixth chapter was the conclusion and further thinking of the research.
