Study On The Mechanism Of Transportation Resources On The Development Of Express Delivery Industry

ABSTRACT:As representative express delivery companies in the U.S. express delivery market, UPS and REA achieved golden development relying on transportation resources. UPS successfully developed hundreds of years, while REA went bankrupt after nearly half a century. This phenomenon leads to the research question of this article, namely the mechanism of transportation resources on the development of express delivery industry.In this paper, the characteristics of express delivery industry, express delivery product and transportation resources were analyzed. Then the analytical framework of the mechanism of transportation resources on the development of express delivery industry was built. With this analytical framework, the mechanisms of transportation resources on the development of express delivery industry were theoretically analyzed. Express transportation resources have an effect on the scale and efficiency of express delivery network, thereby affecting the time accessibility and spatial accessibility of express delivery product. Thus transportation resources have an impact on the the development of courier company and express delivery industry. There are two main paths about transportation resources affecting the development of the courier industry. And the results are mainly on the volume of courier business, the revenue of courier business and the development stage of express delivery industry.Empirical research was also done with UPS, REA and SF as examples. The changes of transportation resources in these courier companies were analyzed in order to find the mechanisms of transportation resources on these courier companies. And some development experience was also fund.The internal allocation of transportation resources determines the efficiency of express network, affecting time accessibility and spatial accessibility of express delivery product. The controllability of transportation resources affects the long-term and stable development of express delivery companies. The allocation structure and the controllability of transportation resource are crucial to the development of the courier industry.
