Harbin is located in the lower reaches of Songhua River Plain, with flattopography,abundant water resources.It has the congenital traffic advantages and a longhistory of shipping.Before the modern time, shipping has always been one of the mainmode of transport to Harbin and its surrounding areas.Since the1850s, Russia began tomake a strategic expansion in Songhua river basin, due to Chinese shipping industry isnot developed, and the navigation of Songhua River was dominated byRussian.Between the late19th century and the early20th century, there was apopulation increasing and a economic development in Harbin,then the region hadquickly become one of the most important city in the Far East, the national capitalenterprises began to rise, in purpose of saving the nation in peril and recovering thetraffic rights, the national shipping industry in Harbin has been started soon afterwards.The development of national shipping industry of Harbin set at the time of thesocial background from the early thorns, ups and downs, the rapid development of theinterim period, the capital increase, to move towards the latter part of the joint, thegloom and doom.Every step of the national shipping industry in Harbin are inextricablyin touch with the prevailing economic, political, and changes in the internationalsituation. Harbin shipping industry,an important sector of the economy in Harbin, is amicrocosm of the entire national capital enterprise development, but it also reflects theeconomic development from the side of the whole occasion of the late Qing Dynasty inHeilongjiang region.In addition, Harbin shipping industry had also shouldered theimportant mission of competing against foreign capital enterprises for profits and torecover sovereignty over territorial waters and shippable rights for the nation.As one of the largest water control hubs, the shipping transportation in Harbin wasso convenient that developed the economy of its ports. The opening of the portsincreased the trades and facilitated commodity circulation and communication betweendifferent parts in this area. The frequent exchange of passengers and goods made thecity develop more quickly, which led to the rise of the nearby towns which weresupported by the ports. Besides, it speeded up the modernization of this area, improved local people’s life and changed people’s travel habits. What’s more, the development ofmodern shipping industry in Harbin was beneficial to the development and constructionof the towns in this area, which promoted the urbanization of Harbin.
