The objective of the research was to analyze the effect of the use and control of forest resource (UCFR) and the performance of the community forest enterprise (CFE) in a scheme of vertical integration. Therefore, the contributions of the main theories of the firm and the new institutional economics on performance were analyzed. This study emphasizes the role of institutions and property rights of the commons in the performance of the firm. The institutions governing the behavior and performance of CFE. The study is based on analysis of data from a sampling 30 CFEs in 12 states of Mexico in 2011. The research hypothesis proposes that the UCFR is positively associated with the profits of the CFEs in a vertical integration scheme. The study used linear regression to test the hypothesis. The study concludes that at the sample level, the volume harvested m3/ha, volume sold m3/year and timber production area under forest management (ha) in that order of importance explaining profits $/m3 of CFEs. At the group level, the volume harvested m3/ha explains performance CFEs type III, and volume sold m3/year explains performance CFEs type IV.
