With accelerating promotion of urbanization, industrialization, urban-rural integration and agriculture modernization, Nantong has a series of challenges of increased restriction of development space, sharpened conflicts of resource factor configuration, unreasonable layout of land-ocean construction space, extensive utilization of land, and severe situation of cultivated land protection etc. How to plan rural and urban lands as a whole and reasonably use the land based on orderly promotion of urbanization is the problem to be solved currently. According to the research, remote sensing images in three periods of 2006, 2010, and 2014 in Nantong are taken as the entry point, the land use data set is obtained based on monitoring classification of pixels, and the quantity, structure and spatial pattern change of land use in Nantong are studied. On that basis, different urbanization development stages and land use change characteristics are combined, and a qualitative research of urbanization and land use change in Nantong is conducted. Data of status quo of rate of urbanization and land use during 2005-2012 is selected to conduct the time series data stationary test, cointegration analysis, and Granger causality analysis and research the quantitative relationship between urbanization and land use change in Nantong. Main conclusions are as follows:Firstly, During 8 years of 2006-2014, The structure and quantity of land utilization in Nantong are obviously changed, the comprehensive dynamic degree of land utilization is 2.17%, and the general change is relatively stable. Urban construction is rapidly expanded, construction land surges, and cultivated land and tidal flats are greatly occupied. The cultivated land has been supplemented by land reclamation to some extent, however, the decrease quantity of the cultivated land area is far more greater than the complementary quantity, and it is generally in a reduced trend. Industrial restructuring is the basic reason of the decrease of cultivated land in Nantong, the pressure of cultivated land protection and requisition-compensation balance is huge. Linkup of the Yangtze River with the Yellow Sea, increased construction of coastal areas, and more occupied area of tidal flats than construction land lead to the increase of the area of tidal flats. With the increasing reclamation of the tidal flats, the water area continuously decreases, wherein the absolute values of single land utilization dynamic degree of cultivated land, water, and tidal flats are all below 10%.Secondly, the land utilization transfer matrix is employed to research land utilization type conversion, it is indicated that the conversion of land types is complex, the conversion degrees are different, and the conversion from the cultivated land to construction land and the occupation of construction land by tidal flats are the most severe and obvious. In the research of the change of land utilization spatial pattern in Nantong, as a consequence, the coverage of varied space of various land types is wide, and the situation is more obvious in areas along the rivers, seas, traffic lines and around central urban areas and central tones in counties.Thirdly, land utilization change characteristics are combined with urbanization development characteristics in the stage, and the relationship of the change between the rate of urbanization and land utilization is researched in a qualitative manner. As a result, in the process of urbanization, land utilization changes, the change of land utilization leads to industrial restructuring, the employment is guided, and rapid development of urbanization is promoted.Fourthly, the cointegration analysis and the causality test method are employed to conduct a quantitative research of the change of the rate of urbanization and land utilization. According to the result of the stationary test, the rate of urbanization, the proportion of cultivated land area, and the proportion of construction land area are second-order integrated series, the water area is first-order integrated series, and the proportion of tidal flat area is non-stationary series. Therefore, cointegration analyses of the rate of urbanization with the proportion of cultivated land area and the proportion of construction land area are conducted, a regression equation is obtained, and a long-term equilibrium relation between the rate of urbanization with the proportion of cultivated land area and the proportion of construction land exists. By the correction of the error correction model, a short-term equilibrium relation is obtained. Finally, the Granger causality test is conducted, and the rate of urbanization, the proportion of cultivated land area, and the proportion of construction land are in a causal relationship.
