Since 1980s, Zhouzhuang Town has taken the lead to develop tourism, which was the beginning of ancient-village tourism in China. With the further development of ancient-village tourism, the charm of ancient villages is fully shown. Moreover, while the pressure of life and work is increasing as city life grows tense with each passing day, ancient villages that are natural and secluded have become good places for people to release their stress and to expand their visual field, which has caused a bunch of ancient villages of different local styles to follow suit. Though some financial successes have been made in the boom of ancient-village tourism, its negative impacts can not be ignored, among which the environmental problems are especially prominent. How to maintain the favorable natural environment of ancient villages is an inevitable concern of the present academic circles. At the same time, under the background of low-carbon economy, low-carbon travel would become the best choice for ancient villages, for it concentrates on low-energy and low pollution. Early in 2009, Views on the Acceleration of the Development of Tourism, which was published by the Chinese State Council also advocates boosting energy conservation and environment protection, and encourages low-carbon travel for human to co-develop with the nature. The 17th CPC National Congress also points out that "Ecological civilization construction is related to the vital interests of people and the survival and development of the Chinese nation." Soon afterwards, the 18th CPC National Congress and the Third Plenary Session clearly put forward the strategic decision-making of "Vigorously advance ecological civilization construction" and gave requirement details. From these activities we could see that "low carbon travel" has become an inexorable trend of tourism development. Based on these, it is obviously of great significance,to explore the tourism development and protection of ancient villages from the perspective of low carbon and then to find out an approach that fits the development of ancient villages by taking ancient-village tourism as the research object and by taking Xiushui Village of Fuchuan County of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region as real evidence. On the basis of previous studies, this paper states the basic concepts of ancient villages, ancient-village tourism, low carbon and low-carbon tourism, and dialectically analyzes the right relation between ancient-village tourism and low carbon, with an aim to build theory support for empirical research. Through field work, the paper analyzes the present development of ancient-village tourism of Xiushui Village and then comes up with a practical development pattern for low-carbon travel of ancient villages. Finally, the writer gives concrete strategies through an SWOT analysis and the above research. This paper is divided into six parts. The first part is an introduction to the research background, the research thoughts and the research summary. The second part demonstrates the relation between ancient-village tourism and low carbon through elaborating the concepts of ancient villages, ancient-village tourism and some other relevant concepts, which is the theory basis and premise of this research. Based on field work, the third part introduces the present development of ancient-village tourism of Xiushui Village, which is the foundation for understanding how low carbon development becomes the main development direction of ancient-village tourism. The fourth part analyzes the typical development patterns of current ancient-village tourism by understanding relevant pattern theories, based on which the paper builds a development pattern that fits the ancient-village tourism of Xiushui village and gives a brief exposition on the pattern.
