Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section) is not only the key connection between China and Vietnam as well as an important barrier to national security, but also the convenient channel of China’s inland to ASEAN countries and the bridgehead of opening up, which has the location and geographical advantages of “Along the border, near the ocean, and connected with ASEAN”. Since Sino-Vietnamese relations came to normalization, China-ASEAN Free Trade Area was established, the economic cooperation of Sino-Vietnamese “Two Corridors and one Ring”, the Greater Mekong subregion and the Pan Beibu Gulf region was speeding up, and the economic integration in Southeast Asia was developing towards wide field, multi-level and all-direction, both of which brought vital development opportunities for Guangxi Border Area and promoted rapid development of frontier trade and socio-economy. Against this background,Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section) has become the active zone of international economic exchanges, moreover, it is also the sensitive area of land use change. As a result, land use types in this area has profoundly changed over shape and structure, which, in turn, would have an influence on the ways, degree, function and benefits of land use, even the social and economic development of this area and the whole country. Therefore, it’ll have great practical significance to understand and grasp the spatio-temporal characteristicsis, evolution law and driving factors of land use shape and structure in Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section)in time for reasonably developing and effectively utilizing the land resource, choosing land use patterns and optimizing spatial distribution, along with defending the homeland security in border area.On the basis of Landsat TM images of 1989, 2000 and 2012, fractal theory was applied to study the spatio-temporal pattern of the morphological complexity and structural stability of land use types in Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section) during the year from 1989 to 2012 under the support of remote sensing, geographic information techniques and statistical analysis tools. Meanwhile, combined qualitative analysis with gray relational quantitative analysis, driving forces of land use fractal change were revealed. The results of this study were as follows:1. Remote sensing interpretation, GIS spatial analysis and mathematical statistics methods were used to analyze the quantitative structure, dynamic changes, spatial distribution and pattern evolution of land use change in Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section) from 1989 to2012. During the whole study period, the dominant land use types in this area were woodland and garden plot, cultivated land and unused land. The process of land use change showed that the area of woodland and garden plot, construction land, water and cultivated land increased, while the area of grassland and unused land reduced; furthermore, the range of variation of woodlandand garden plot and grassland was most dramatic, and construction land and grassland had the fastest pace of change. In addition, the spatial distribution features of different land use types varied and took on distrinct evolution rules.2. Based on the application of fractal model, the morphological complexity and structural stability of land use types in this area over the past 20 years were studied systematically, then the variation trend and distribution pattern were also described from the perspective of time and space. The distribution of all land use types in Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section)had fractal characteristics. On the whole, the land use of this area was in the random motion state of simple shape and low structural stability, and its fractal features underwent an evolution process that the shape transformed from complex to simple and the structure transformed from instable to stable, which made the land use present a compact, orderly and reasonable development tendency.3. By means of qualitative analysis and gray relational quantitative analysis, the internal and external driving forces that impacted the fractal features change of land use were deeply dug.The results showed that the limitation of natural conditions, the implementation of policy system, the geometric properties change of land use types together with the social and economic development of this border area prompted land use shape and structure to change gradually.4. In the future, the adjustment and optimization suggestions of land use fractal in Sino-Vietnamese Border Area(Guangxi Section) include: paying attention to the planning guidance and enhancing the stability of land use, strengthening the protection of cultivated land and reforming the agricultural production conditions, improving ecological environment and reducing the interference of natural land use types, as well as tapping the potential of the land and increasing the intensive degree of construction land.
