Since the reform and opening up, China’s economic and social development has undergone enormous changes and made remarkable achievements. According to the task of comprehensively deepening the reform, China now faces an important issue where changes should be made in the form of China’s economic and social development. The reform brings about new requirements, new tasks and new goals to change our way of economic development, suggesting great efforts should be take to solve this current hot issue. At present, China’s mode of economic development shifts gradually from extensive to intensive. However, the main driving force of China’s economic development is still the traditional extensive economic which relies on high input, high accumulation and high consumption, neither fully meeting the objective requirements of economic and social development nor doing favors to the sustained, stable and healthy development.Firstly, this paper bases its argumentation on the theory of accelerating the improvement of the socialist market economic system and the transformation of economic development mode from the report of18thParty Congress, and also elaborated the importance and urgency of China’s changes in its economic development mode, in the context of comprehensive deepening reform which was emphasized on the Third Plenary Session of the Eighteenth Central Committee.Secondly, combined with China’s specific conditions at this stage, this paper analyzes the opportunities and challenges faced by today’s China. Based on the current social realities, this paper does empirical analysis on main problems existing in China’s economic development mode and thus comes to a conclusion that under the traditional mode, China’s economy suffers from the inefficiency of production, the shortage of resources and other adverse factors.Thirdly, aiming to solve the practical existing problems of China’s economic development mode, this paper compares typical practices taken in the United States, Japan, Latin America and other countries or regions, and then summarizes the experience which is worth learning.Finally, to meet the new requirements of comprehensive deepening reform, from different aspects, this paper proposes the specific paths in which China’s economic development mode can shift. This paper especially puts forward the idea of establishing a sound institutional basis of intensive economic growth, developing modernized industrial system, and properly handling the relationship between the government and the market.
