Agriculture is the foundation of the national economy, which not only affects other departments, but also impacts country’s security and stability. Because of the disadvantages on technology, labor force quality and infrastructure, developing countries are unable to gain much value-added in the progress of agriculture international vertical specialization, so have a low position in the agriculture global value chain(GVC). Against this background, the main purpose of this paper is to study how to improve developing countries’status in agriculture GVC.First, we analyze the impacts of vertical specialization on GVC status from upgrading and lock aspects. Second, we use34typical developing countries’trade data to calculate the extent of vertical specialization and GVC status, and make a horizontal and vertical comparison between different countries respectively. Third, we use a theoretical model to analyze the factors that may influence the GVC status, and on the basis of it, we set an econometric model to test. We find that improvement in human capita, technology, infrastructure can upgrade the agriculture GVC, but vertical specialization has a significant negative effect on GVC upgrading. Finally, we find the advantages and disadvantages of Chinese agriculture by making a comparison between China and other typical developing countries, and give suggestions accordingly. The innovation of this paper is the application of GVC framework to the agriculture vertical specialization, which expands the research scope of the GVC and helps developing countries to improve their agriculture competence in the vertical specialization context.
