Global economic progress brought about changes in energy demand as traditional energy sources come with high consumption, high-pollution and high carbon emissions, which immensely deteriorates environmental problems. Therefore, a new green, renewable energy, which is environmental-friendly with low carbon emissions, catches world’s attention. The new energy, also called unconventional energy, generally refers to the renewable energy which is being developed or actively studied and to be promoted on the basis of new technology. With the boost of China’s economy, the growing material needs leads to shortage of resources and increasingly serious environmental pollution, urging the development of new energy. In response to the call of the development of new energy, power system also established a development plan to build a harmonious grid and to take up the mission of dedicating to the new green clean energy. Hydropower resources is clean and renewable energy in itself, which out-stands in China’s advanced resources and enjoys an unshakable position in the history of China’s energy development. The harmonious development of our economy and society can not do without the strong support of hydropower resources. Yanbian attaches great importance to the harmonious development of economy and environment as well as the development plan of new energy industry. In "the Twelve Five-Year" plan and "the Thirteen Five-Year" plan of Yanbian, energy transition, technology transformation, ecological protection and so on have been highlighted and bio-gas, bio-mass, geothermal, hydropower and other new energy sources are in a healthy growth according to the plan. Since the development of new energy in Yanbian is at the beginning, it lacks sufficient technical and governmental support as well as flexible talents and cash flow. Rather, the instability of new energy makes it difficult to use a large-scale transport, only to be converted to electricity can it be more stable and applicable. Pumped storage power station is equipped with power storage function, using upper and lower reservoir height gap to generate electricity. Pumped storage power station, which is safe, environmental-protecting and energy-efficient, has been the mainstay in the power supply system and the backbone of China’s new energy development. Meanwhile, the pumped storage power station is competitive in storage capacity, life cycle, economy, safety and reliability in power system. Besides, the research and development technology is more mature compared to other energy storage devices, which lies a solid foundation for promoting the development of new energy. Yanbian has a natural advantage with rich water resources, good geological structure, abundant rainfall and pleasant climate, furthermore with vigorous momentum of economic development, generous national policy and a strong will to develop new energy. Constructing Pumped Storage Power Station In Yanbian will not only promote economic development, better achieve low carbon emissions, reduce energy consumption, protect the ecological environment, but also create more jobs and boost the development of new energy industry in Yanbian.This paper illustrates the concept and characteristics of new energy sources, systematically introduces relevant theory and discusses the working principles and development tasks of pumped storage power station, believing that the pumped storage power plant, which can reduce energy consumption, save coal-firing and power generation costs, reduce air pollution caused by burning coal, is green, environmental-protecting, efficient and secure in line with the concept of new energy sources. At the same time, the paper analyzes the features of Yanbian’s natural environment and the advantages of the construction of pumped storage power station. Then makes a national economic evaluation of the construction of pumped storage power stations in Yanbian. This paper concludes the huge influence the plant had on the development of new energy sources in Yanbian, and reckons the necessity and reason of constructing a power station.
