Small hydropower is a kind of green, environmentally-friendly and renewable clean energy source. The development of small hydropower has played a very important role in the national economy, especially in the remote areas. It has increased employment, promoted electrification and has brought a series of economic benefits and social benefits to the local.However, with the rapid development of small hydropower, which differs in size, equipment, technology and management, its connection to the power gird has negative influence on the grid’s operating stability, voltage stability and electricity dispatching management, under the distinctive circumstances of natural geography and run-off. It has attracted more attention to analyse the overall benefit of its connection to the power grid.This paper firstly summarized the current domestic and overseas research on the above question. Beginning with the current management status of the small hydropower stations in Fenghua, the influence of small hydropower on the power grid operation, electrictity quality and stability has been analysed. A new model of managing small hydropower has been proposed, which emphasizes the importance of the accesss procedure before connecting to the grid, and the electricity dispatching management, the security management and the effective regulatory measures after its connection. With further discussion on the voltage problems of Tanhu hydropower plant, Jinshan hydropower plant and Zhuling hydropower plant in Fenghua, the paper proposed the measures of enhancing the production efficiency of the small hydropower in Fenghua.On the basis of cost-benefit theory, the paper analyzed the overall benefit of small hydropower generation cost after its connection to the power grid, including the reducing loss benefit, the environment benefit and the reliability improving benefit. After establishing and making use of the cost-benefit evaluation model of small hydropower to analyze the specific benefit of Taili and Shichuankeng electric station, it has come to a conclution that the overall benefit of small hydropower is closely related to the station’s establishing time, the installed electricity capacity, the electricity price level and the connected location to the grid.Finally, based on the above analysis, this paper has proposed the developmental strategies, policies and suggestions on the connection of small hydropower to Fenghua power grid.
