In 1876, Korea and Japan signed the "Treaty of Ganghwa", Korea was forced to open Pusan, Wonsan, Incheon three ports to trade. In 1882, China and Korea signed the "Regulations of Commercial and Civil Trade through Maine and Land Ways between China and Korea", the modern ocean trade opened officially between China and Korea. China and Japan launched a competition on the ocean trade with Korea. Facing the economic force that Japan penetrated deeply to Korea. Qing government helped to build the modern customs and dispatched foreign Inspector-General to managed affairs of customs for the request of Korean government. In order to strengthen the suzerainty of Korea, Inspector-General H. F. Merrill sorted out all the information of Korea Customs to China Customs, and eventually formed the "Returns of Trade at the Korean three Treaty Ports".According to the collation and analysis to the trade volumes, we can see a picture of this period of prosperity of Sino-Korean ocean trade. Despite the fluctuations in revenue during this period, but the overall upward trend; Although the main export product of Korea was native product, Chinese main export product was entrepot trade. But the kind of trade in goods between China and Korea was rich and varied; The trade of three customs had their own characteristics, the trade developed soon. All of this can’t be separated from the guidance and support of the two governments, commercial activities between the two businessmen and the functions of customs.Throughout this period the development of ocean trade by the two countries, people can find out that the ocean trade had more significant influence on Korea. The ocean trade had made the direct promotion on economic development by both countries, the disintegration of natural economy in Korea, the rapid development of national industry and commerce; with the development of the ocean trade, the port cities grew up very fast; the trade between the two counties promoted the relationship of people, and the overseas Chinese had made great contribution to the development of North Korea; although the Qing government considered about the suzerain-vassal state relationship in that process had made a certain hindered of the development of modern free trade between two countries, and the significance of ocean trade can drive the state relationship to the modern relations between China and Korea.
