In recent years, the climate warming caused by excessive greenhouse gas emission has become the focus of global attention. Massive carbon dioxide emissions are related with the rapid growth of export trade in China. The reduction impact of China’s carbon emissions has been a focus of attention for a long time. This article reveals the growth reasons of embodied carbon of the export trade and then provides a reference for decisions of government and other departments.Firstly, based on input-output method, we propose the computing methods of direct carbon emission coefficient, complete carbon emission coefficient and embodied carbon of export trade. With the manufacturing industry of China as an example, we measure the direct carbon emission coefficient, complete carbon emission coefficient and embodied carbon of export trade, and we achieve a series of results:(1) Direct carbon emission coefficient and complete carbon emission coefficient all show a trend of decline, which means that the policy of energy conservation and emissions reduction has achieved good results; (2) Percentage of total manufacturing exports implicit carbon dioxide emissions account for more than 50% between 2000 and 2007.This shows that more than half the carbon dioxide emissions are caused by the import demand of China’s trading partners;(3) Embodied carbon of export trade of manufacturing industry shows a trend of increase. To reduce domestic carbon emissions, we should improve the production technology of main export department, and select appropriate alternatives for production and export. Secondly, we use the Structual Decomposition Analysis and Logarithmic Mean Divisia Index Analysis to devide the reasons for growth of carbon emissions into three aspects, including technical effect, structural effect and scale effect. The empirical results show that scale effect plays a positive role in the growth of embodied carbon of export trade.Technical effect plays a negative role in the growth of embodied carbon of export trade. In addition, the structural effect is of both positive and negative. Finally, we put forward suggestions to control the growth of embodied carbon according to the empirical results.
