In recent years, the life insurance industry of China has developed rapidly, and has been playing more and more important role in social progress and economy development. However, the life insurance industry has been plagued with the problems of human resource. The state of lacking of the amount of life insurance agents makes life insurance industry needing urgently for professional agents. The methods and systems of recruitment, selection, performance appraisal, career planning and pay systems aren’t objective, scientifical or effective, which results in the loss and job-hopping of professional life insurance agents serious. Based on the actual situation,the article is exploring competency model of life insurance agents, Selecting the elite group of Z life insurance company, as empirical research object.Firstly, the article collects competency and performance projects of profession agents in life insurance industry, using the methods of Behavioral Event Interview and task analysis. Then through correlation analysis to identify significant differences competency characteristics, which are designed to pre-tested questionnaires and formal questionnaires, using methods of exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis. And it also constructs six-dimension competency model, including Achievement orientation, professionalization, organizational commitment and organization identity, customer-oriented, integrity, learning and development. In addition, it analyses the differences of competencies of life insurance agents at different ages, different practitioners of time, different qualifications and different management levels.Finally, the article puts forward the ranges of conditions and application, and further relaborates on application of this mode in specific human resource strategies, for example recruitment, selection, the training and development and career planning. The author hopes the article can have some reference value for the industry on recruitment,selection, performance appraisal, pay systems and career planning of life insurance agents.
