The Industrial Revolution has long been the focus of historical studies. And in recent years, the international historians are more into work on research of the nature of the industrial revolution, such as effects oftextile and metallurgical industry on it. Coal industry came into being form about the late sixteenth century is one of the oldest industrial sectors in coal-rich Kingdom the UK, it has already had a history of over 400 years. This paper attempts to discuss the British coal industry and its promotion to the industrial revolution and the British national power from the perspective of industrial development.There are a lot of research projects for the history of modern British coal industry and economic development, and many related books and dissertation published at home and abroad. Most of them are focused on the research of economic effects, not to systematical describe the background and development of the British coal industry itself during the eighteenth Century to twentieth Century. This paper trying to discuss the rise of British coal industry and its characteristics in more detail and systematic.Observing British Industrial Revolution from perspective of coal industry and have a comprehensive understanding of British coal industry development during this period. The key point of this paper is the specific effect of coal industry to the UK.This paper includes tree parts:The first part mainly discusses how the coal replace the wood as main energy source and its effects to British at that time, then introduces the rising background of modern British coal industry. This part of contents do foreshadowing for following chapters. First to describe the process of how the coal became main source and the background of British industrial revolution from perspective of coal industry. The next to introduce how the coal industry promote the development of productive forces during the initial stage of British coal mining technology.The second part introduces situation of British coal industry and its technological innovation during the industrial revolution. The coal industry developed by capitalizing and became largest production sector of British by social needs and self-reform. Then explains why the scientists paid a lot of attention to coal industry, and introduce their coal related inventions include the technology of vents and drains in mine.The third part is the most important chapters of the paper. This part discusses the specific effects of coal industry development in British social and economic. Then summarizes that coal industry development can help to improve the socio-economic development and people’s living standards in British.Finally, this paper describes the British coal industry development with Chinese national conditions. Try to provide some suggestions to the development of Chinese coal industry.
