The competition in the marketplace is getting fiercer nowadays due to globalization. Staff retention has emerged as the most discussed topic among top management over the globe in this decade. EMS companies are inevitably facing the challenges from staff turnover. Having invested time and resources in selecting, training, and appraising staff, the employer naturally wants its staff to stay with the firm. Unfortunately, keeping good staff can be challenging.By analyzing the case of planning staff turnover in J company, this paper aims to find out the coping strategies for planning staff retention in J Company through various methodologies such as theoretical review of turnover and retention, quantitative data analysis through questionnaire, qualitative analysis through staff interview. There are five chapters in this thesis. In chapter one it is an overall introduction of this paper and chapter two for theoretical review of turnover and retention: turnover, stress, motivation, LMX(leader-member exchange theory), PPS(perceived supervisor support), job satisfaction. Chapter three is case study profile and chapter four data analysis findings. Chapter five are recommendations on the coping strategies for planning staff retention and research limitations. In conclusion, it proposes four planning staff retention strategies which are appropriate workloads, rewards and recognition and perceived supervisor support as well as environmental improvement. The originality of this study is that it presents a case study about staff retention in J company, the third largest EMS provider in the world, typically running workcell business model. It also provides a good insight in staff retention for other EMS companies. My suggestion for further study is that the sample size should be enlarged. It is worthy of considering to study more situation-specific contexts which may give more advisable insights on staff retention.
