Express industry develops rapidly in recent years. It provides service for production enterprises as well as customers, therefore, express industry which has the nature of both productive service and consumptive service belongs to modern service industry. Express industry in China will have great development as economic booming and improvement of people’s living standards, especially significantly speed-up of the production and life rhythm.At present, foreign express delivery industry has entered a mature stage. They have accumulated sufficient experience and formed a relatively perfect express mode, and have the competitive advantage in the market. While in some developing countries as well as China, express industry is still in the developing stage. The competitive advantage has not been fully established. A serious problem all domestic express enterprises facing is that how to obtain the long-term development of the express industry. Cultivating own competitive advantage as soon as possible is an effective way for enterprises to gain the rights of subsistence and initiative. Therefore, express enterprises must choose the appropriate development model based on own resources, learn from the advanced operation experiences, and establish special competitive advantage.This paper selects the United States of America and Japan as representatives to research the foreign express delivery industry. It respectively reviews the histories of their express industry, and summarizes their mature development modes. At the same time, it also describes Chinese express industry history and current development mode. Accordingly, using the theory of diamond model, it concludes some influencing factors from the aspects of production, market demand, related industries, business strategy and policy opportunities, and carries out a comparative study of express development mode among the United States, Japan and China. Finally, taking Chinese private enterprise SF EXPRESS as an example, it draws a concrete analysis of its operation mode and forming condition, and provides policy suggestions for domestic high-speed-developing express industry. In reference to the advanced experience of foreign countries, express industry in China should improve industry resources, give full play to own characteristics, and establish unique advantages in marking competition, in order to achieve sustainable development.
