The Stage Characteristics Of Relationship Between China’s Urbanization And Energy Efficiency

Since China’s reform and opening up, China is undergoing the process of unprecedented rapid urbanization and industrialization. China’s rapid urbanization process improves the urban demand for energy, which profoundly affects the development of urbanization. In the background of the environmental problems and energy shortage problem is increasingly serious, our country actively promotes the policy of energy conservation and emissions reduction and low carbon economy development,18th CPC National Congress improves the construction of ecological civilization to a new height. How to improve the energy efficiency is the key to China’s energy strategy, Energy efficiency’s improvement can relieve the problem of energy shortages and environmental pollution.The paper discusses the stage characteristics of relationship between China’s urbanization and energy efficiency, Especially considering China’s current urbanization development stage and economic development stage. First, the paper analyzes the theory mechanism of urbanization how to influence energy consumption based on the existing literature, the results show that urbanization can directly affect the energy consumption, and also affects the energy consumption through economic growth, industrial structure, technological progress and other intermediate variables. Second, the paper analyzes the regional difference of the relationship between urbanization and energy consumption based on dynamic panel model, the results show that the relationship of urbanization and energy efficiency is positive in central and eastern region, while the relationship of urbanization and energy efficiency is negative in western region. The result provides the empirical basis to further explore the stage characteristics of relationship between urbanization and energy efficiency based on the fact that urbanization and economic development is not balanced in each region of our country. Finally, the paper analyzes the stage characteristics of relationship between urbanization and energy efficiency based on threshold panel model, the results show that in the different stages of economic development, the impact of urbanization on energy efficiency is different. With the improvement of economic development, the influence of urbanization on energy efficiency is flagging. In the different stages of urbanization, the relationship between urbanization and energy efficiency is not the same. With the constant improvement of the level of urbanization, the effects of urbanization on the energy efficiency is undergoing a process from positive effec to positive effect, namely the relationship between urbanization and energy efficiency presents a significant U type curve.
