With the process of urbanization in China, the growth of off-farm labor participation from rural labor force and more farmlands converting to non-farming lands take place at the same time. Is this phenomenon inevitable or coincident? In this paper, we use 1240 farm households’data from 1998 to 2013 in individual level to estimate the effect of land-taking on the behavior of farmers’off-farm participation by applying the DID model on the basis of other researches. The empirical analysis results show that during the period of 1998 to 2013, compared with the farmers whose households had never been taken lands, the famers whose households had been taken lands at least once have more possibilities in off-farm participations, and it’s significant at 1% level. Although land-taking has different effects on the behaviors of farmers in different provinces, only in Jiangsu and Jilin, the effects are significant at 1% level. The effects of land-taking on the behavior of farmers in different years are also different, except the year of 2003,2006 and 2013,the effects are not significant in remaining years. In the meantime, we also analyze the effects of different purposes of land-taking ——public purpose and commercial purpose——on the behaviors of farmers’off-farm participation. The results show that compared with the public purpose land-taking, commercial purpose land-taking can significantly improve the possibilities of farmers’off-farm participation at 1% level for all households, while there are no enough evidences show that the two purposes have obvious different influences on households that have been taken lands. Although the effects of different purposes’ land-taking on the behavior of farmers in different years are also different, but except the year of 2000 and 2003,the effects are not significant in remaining years. Compared with the land-taking of public purpose, the land-taking of commercial purpose have significant positive effect on the behavior of farmers’off-farm participation only in Jiangsu and Jilin at 1% level.
