Taking the global complex water system research as a starting point, this paper conducts a study on the underlying dynamics of the complex water systems from their three main components such as the water security systems, the hydropower systems and the reclaimed water systems based on the bibliometric analysis, knowledge system evolution and system model evaluation. From the perspective of academic output, the evolution of complex water system was comprehensively analyzed. The traditional literature metrology models are used to fit the analysis of the nation, discipline, author, journal and citation of water security system, hydroenergy system and reclaimed water system. The theoretical models include Zipf model,Bradford model,Lotka model, and the Logistic growth model in various fields, which all shows that the complex water system is still in the early stage of its development. In addition, for the co-word network, the key words in the literature are extracted, and the evolution rules of the water security system, the hydroenergy system and the reclaimed water system are analyzed, and the power-law distribution in word frequency distribution and degree distribution is found. The power-law properties of the degree distributions in the co-word network after artificial merging provide the basis for the study of the pervasive networks and network characteristics. The co-word network is based on the keyword. As the visualization of the evolution of the key words,it can help to find the evolution of the knowledge in the complex water systems. The common power law distribution in word network diagram provides a theoretical basis for knowledge dissemination in the complex water systems.Based on the co-word network of keyword formation, the keywords are merged, classified and extracted. The assessment model of complex water systems is accordingly constructed, which can more intuitively reflect the effects of each indicator in the complex water system on the whole system. This can further provide a good methodological basis for complex water system analysis. The yielded results can offer theoretical foundation for environmental management and policy analysis of complex water system.
